Your two days in Amsterdam obviously have to start out as all mornings do - with a matcha. Slide into Lera for a delicious drink and shop their cute little cafe gift shop, or Locals if you want to grab a bite as well. Caffeine secured, it's time to kick off your day in the city with the obvious thing to do - a ride down the canals. My personal favorite way to do it is to grab some snacks and drinks from an Albert Heijn and then hop on your own little electric canal boat and captain yourself under candy-box bridges while houseboats clink gently against the quay.
Dock by De Pijp for an early lunch at Esh Pitabar. I'm a hummus fanatic, and I love how velvety smooth theirs is, and they have the most delicious warm and pillowy pita to accompany it. Fuel up for the sensory overload of Albert Cuypmarkt, just two blocks away. Hunt for powder-blue Delft tiles, stroopwafels hot off the iron, and that €15 vintage leather jacket that looks custom-aged for your wardrobe. They are open six days a week, so you can't miss them. I can never leave without picking up something. Afterwards, a ten-minute stroll sets you in the beautiful Rijksmuseum where you can admire the beautiful pieces from Rembrandt to Van Gogh. Bonus points if it's sunny because just outside is a beautiful garden to relax in.
Evening hunger calls for my favorite slice in the city, Loulou Pizzabar. It's fresh, delicious, and Italian mother-approved. Just don't forget to get a reservation beforehand because people are quickly learning how great this place is. And if you can't steal a seat, next door is a Greek restaurant where the food is ok, but the vibes are cheesy and perfect and 10/10. Then, when you are ready to call it a night, right across the canal is your hotel, Pestana Amsterdam Riverside. It's beautiful and a great stay, and right near De Pijp, which to me is like the West Village of Amsterdam. You can keep the night going and hang out in their bar, or get a good night's sleep and wake up early enough to check out their delicious breakfast buffet.
Day Two opens sweet: the classic Dutch breakfast of poffertjes at Pat’s Poffertjes, butter-slick and icing-sugar kissed, eaten standing so you can keep pace with the city’s cyclists. Next, we go back to the arts, but this time in a way you haven't done before. The industrial cathedral of Fabrique des Lumières, where immersive projections swirl across brick walls and mirrored troughs—Van Gogh stars one minute, cosmic florals the next. It's stunning and mesmerizing. Appetite rekindled, wander to the covered Foodhallen for more classic and tastefully crafted Dutch bites like herring and smelts (not for me personally, but maybe for you) and craft gin-tonics sipped beneath string lights.
Afternoon is for treasure hunting—POP18, AVC, and Penny Lane Vintage deal in 70s coats, ’90s Prada minis, and silk scarves that still smell faintly of Chanel. And once you find your newest outfit and your tote is brimming, it's time to catch the fast and free ferry to NDSM. Shipping-container murals fade into beach-bar Pllek, where you’ll dip bare feet in sand, order an elderflower spritz, and watch the sunset. I suggest wearing a little cotton mini dress and sandals, or a tank top and jeans with lots of bangles. Talk about a perfect end to a perfect day.
In two days, you’ve sipped strawberry matcha, piloted a private canal boat, bar-hopped a reclaimed shipyard beach, thrifted one-of-a-kind denim, tasted my holy Dutch trinity of fries, poffertjes, and artisan pizza, and stood inches from a Rembrandt. Pack the suede jacket and the canal breeze in your hair—you’ve lived the Amsterdam it-girl fantasy, and your camera roll is begging for its own carousel.
So go ahead and book the Pestana, reserve that dinner, and let the city’s light dance on the water until your last ferry home.
